I normally do not blog on the weekends, but I feel that this is one of those times where blogging on the weekends is necessary.
See, 1 year ago today, I was checking into the Governor’s School for International Studies at the University of Memphis. I was excited, yet scared, for what was in store for me; I didn’t honestly know how I would handle 2 college level courses at the same time, and honestly, I didn’t know how I would survive 5 weeks of it.
Well, the camp came and went, and I was absolutely blown away by the experience. Actually, it’s almost impossible for me to describe the experience in words; I’ve met some of the best people I know, made new friends, and learned all about the world of international relations. Even 1 year later, it feels just like yesterday I was actively writing papers, reading Shimko, and writing in my old blog that didn’t have a clear focus nor had the readership this one has now.
Today, the Governor’s School of International Studies class of 2009 checks in, and I wish them the very best in their adventures- sure, they have different dorms and therefore won’t enjoy the railroad tracks, foosball games, pool, and long treks to and from class that the class of 2008 did, but they will find ways to have fun on their own, I’m sure of it.
As many of you know, this blog was initially born as a Governor’s School for International Studies study tool- daily summaries of the day’s reading so all of us could do better on the daily reading quizzes. It wasn’t even a blog at first- just an e-mail list and a word document sent out every day with key points from each piece of reading. It’s come a long way since then, and let’s keep it going.
To the class of 2009, have a great time at Governor’s School; you’ll learn a lot and get college credit, too.
Have a great time!
